What people are saying about the Blackwoods
Yes, Virginia, There Still Is A Blackwood Brothers Quartet
I've had many people here in Branson ask me the whereabouts of The Blackwoods.
Ron, R.W., and Donna Blackwood were highly visible as one of Branson's more
popular shows a few years ago.
Well, I'm glad to report that the Blackwood family is alive and well and living
it up in Pigeon Forge, TN. On my recent trip there, Ron invited us to their very
popular morning show at the "Black Bear Jamboree". This is a new
theater for the popular singing group, having performed for the last few years
at the Louise Mandrell Theater.
Who says gospel music is stuffy? Not these folks who do about an hour and a half
of great variety, comedy and good old Gospel Music.
The Blackwood Brothers, which is the name the group goes by now, is composed of
brothers Ron and R.W., Steve Warren on the tenor and a dynamic young bass
singer.
Rounding out the show is R.W.'s wife Donna and Ron's wife Shelley Layne, a
former CNN anchor person who seems to have Ron under pretty good control.
Someone said, "Ron, you look henpecked," to which Ron replied,
"Sure I am, but man look at my hen!"
It's always great to hear stories of people being able to rise above their past
failures, and set their sights on loftier things and become more successful than
they have ever been. Such is the case with Ron who has earned the respect of
many of his peers.
The Blackwood Brothers Quartet has been a driving influence on the Gospel Music
scene for many decades. Ron and R.W.'s father and uncle James saw to that. Now
the mantle has been passed to another two Blackwood brothers who are more
determined than ever to do the Blackwood name proud in this century.
My hat's off to this delightful group who were kind enough to allow me to sing
with them in Branson during the mid-1990's. It was a most pleasant experience
for me and one I shall not soon forget. The Blackwood Brothers ...still
"giving the world a smile" after all these years.
